blog posts i’ve commented on

March 7th, 2007 catnip

i really like the feature on flickr where you can subscribe to a feed of other people’s comments on ‘Photos and Sets you’ve commented on’. i have yet to discover a way of doing a similar thing with blog posts. i’ve heard that it is possible to subscribe to the comments relating to each individual post, but that would be a nightmare. what i want is one feed of all the comments on any blog posts i have commented on, i guess one for each type of blog would be manageable e.g. ‘blogger posts i’ve commented on’ or ‘wordpress posts i’ve commented on’. blogger makes me sign in to leave a comment, but i can’t seem to find a way of tracking comments i have made, let alone any subsequent comments made by others, am i missing something?

stop stopping

March 7th, 2007 catnip

I have a bone to pick with my other half. His twisted brummie dialect has started rubbing off on me. The problem is that he uses the word ’stop’ when he means ’stay’, this seemingly innocent little annoyance becomes rather alarming when he’s giving me directions, such as “stop in this lane”. Wha? he wants me to park up in the middle of the road?!

But now he’s even got me thinking that way. This morning, the weather lady on the telly announced: “I’m pleased to say the rain in London will be stopping.” It took me a good few seconds to realise that there wasn’t a drought on in the capital that I hadn’t heard about!

This has left me wondering: is this really a brummie-ism or just a bounder-ism? brummies own up!

free music!

February 26th, 2007 catnip

Last year, I downloaded the South by Southwest festival Showcasing Artists torrent, which contained over 600 tracks available free to download legally. The download spanned quite a lot of genres, including indie/alternative, rock, metal, hip-hop and bluegrass; and included some established artists as well as many I hadn’t heard of. I still don’t think I’ve listened to them all yet, but I have discovered quite a few gems so far. Of the tracks I was previously unaware of, these are my favourite discoveries so far:

“October Language” by Belong (post rock)
“Black Hand” by Cadence Weapon (hip hop)
“Mothure” by Chas. Mtn. (acoustic)
“Laughing Machines” by Coaxial (trip hop)
“Second Son” by Elliott Brood (bluegrass)
“Bedside Table” by Flip Grater (guitar)
“Drink to Moving On” by Grand National (guitar)
“Bombs in the Distance” by The Holy Fire (guitar)
“Psychic Connection” by Hyperbubble (electro)
“When the Stars Shine” by Instruments (acoustic)
“Kukicha” by Jad Fair and Lumberob (er?!)
“Drive You Faster” by John Schooley and His One Man (guitar)
“Snow Falls in November” by Julie Doiron (acoustic)
“Good Man” by King Straggler (acoustic)
“Transition” by The Longcut (guitar)
“Mantra” by Lovetones (guitar)
“Duluth” by Luke Zimmerman (acoustic)
“Fingerprints” by Maggie Walters (acoustic)
“Even Without You” by The Magnolias (guitar)
“The Hypothesist” by Novillero (guitar)
“Modern Swinger” by The Pink Spiders (guitar)
“love i have 4 u” by Ron Franklin (acoustic)
“Don’t Believe Everything You Hear” by Shane Bartell (acoustic)
“Breathe” by Sistas in the Pit (guitar)
“Dark and Weary World” by South Austin Jug Band (bluegrass)
“19 Million AC” by The Spits (guitar)
“Abitudine” by Subsonica (guitar)
“Last Kiss” by T.D. Lind (acoustic)
“Louise” by Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail (guitar)
“Every Little Bit” by Thee Fine Lines (guitar)
“Tale From Black” by Tunng (acoustic)
“Understanding The New Violence” by Uncut (guitar)
“White Noise” by The Vacation (guitar)
“You Are a Knife” by Veto (guitar)
“Violet Furs” by The Whigs (guitar)
“House of Sin” by ZZZ (guitar)

Of these, I think two tracks are outstanding:
“Last Kiss” by T.D. Lind and “You Are a Knife” by Veto

News of the SXSW Showcasing Artists 2007 free download came to me via Pete Ashton. I’ve just finished downloading it (739 tracks - took about 2 days!) and am looking forward to diving in.

polar bear sos

February 16th, 2007 catnip

“For a brief period of time, the Bush Administration is accepting public comments on its proposal to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act.

Please vote for polar bear protection right now by submitting your Official Citizen Comment at NRDC’s new PolarBearSOS website.”

Not sure how much importance the Bush Admin will place on non-US citizen comments, but it’s got to be worth trying. The form does have a country field.

brmb on cutting edge shocker

February 10th, 2007 catnip

I hate brmb, it’s nothing personal, I hate most commercial radio stations. However, someone in their marketing department has their finger on the pulse and have made the most of new trend for reverse graffiti.

God knows what V-day is - Valentines Day? some crappy competition which humiliates some poor listener or even puts their health at risk?

Earthlings

February 7th, 2007 catnip

Earthlings, the film

“Narrated by Academy Award Nominee Joaquin Phoenix and featuring music by the critically acclaimed platinum artist Moby, EARTHLINGS is a documentary film about humankind’s complete economic dependence on animals raised for pets, food, clothing, entertainment and scientific research. Using hidden cameras and never-before-seen footage, EARTHLINGS chronicles the day-to-day practices of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit. Powerful, informative, controversial and thought-provoking, EARTHLINGS is by far the most comprehensive documentary ever produced on the correlation between nature, animals and human economic interests.”

Raises the issue of ’species-ism’, a term I’ve never heard before but a concept I have thought about.

Beware, the trailers contain some footage of animal cruelty. I’m not sure whether I would be able to watch the film or whether the depictions of animal cruelty would be too upsetting, there’s nothing that makes me more angry.

I worry that this will be a bit like An Inconvenient Truth where the people who really need to see it won’t, but hopefully it will manage to convert a few people.

reverse graffiti

January 26th, 2007 catnip

you can’t get into trouble for cleaning muck off of the streets right? let’s hope not because some street artists are making some fantastic artwork using that technique, particularly Alexandre Orion from Brazil

Inhabitat » REVERSE GRAFFITI: Clean Green Street Art

wonder if they’ll make the kids go dirty up their reverse graffiti tags if they get caught…

update - even our local crap commercial radio station in Birmingham have had a go at reverse graffiti, that’s sure to make it uncool :-(
damn, I was hoping to have a go myself!
